Localized Chinese Teacher Training Program for Philippines (2+2)

  • Introduction

    Organizer College: Fujian Normal University.

    Candidate Qualification: A qualified candidate must be a Philippine college student who has completed the Chinese courses or Chinese normal education required for a sophomore, or a Chinese teacher of Philippine nationality, with equivalent education. He/she must be adequately acquainted with the culture and profile of China, have a medium (or above) level of mastery of the Chinese language and be devoted devoutly to Chinese teaching.

    Enrolment Qualification: The trainee must enter into a tripartite agreement with his/her school and Fujian Normal University. After he/she completes the courses and returns to the Philippines, the trainee must be engaged in Chinese teaching for at least 5 years. Any violator of the contractual terms will suffer the invalidation of the graduation certificate and the degree certificate, and be required to make compensation for all the training costs.

    Graduation Qualification: To graduate effectively, the trainee must complete all the courses, earn the required credits, accomplish the field work satisfactorily and pass the thesis defense.

    Academic Certificate & Degree Certificate: The trainee will receive an undergraduate certificate issued by Fujian Normal University, or jointly by the two colleges that are parties to the aforesaid agreement. Any trainee eligible for a degree certificate may file for the issuance of a certificate of bachelor’s degree.

    Program Duration: 2 academic years.

    Program Objectives: The training program is intended to assist the trainee to: 1) master a systematic knowledge of ontological theories of Chinese; 2) be familiar with the rationale, method and skills of teaching Chinese as a foreign language; 3) be acquainted with the extensiveness of the Chinese culture and the current profile of China; 4) be acquainted with cross-cultural communication theories and apply the same to language teaching; 4) and be basically capacitated for teaching Chinese as a foreign language.

    Tuition: A full ride scholarship will be provided for the student by Office of Chinese Language Council International (Hanban) and Fujian Normal University, with the exception that the student must bear all the lodging costs.     2. Course Description

    1) Advanced Chinese

    Based on reading comprehension, this course deals primarily with important words and common sentence patterns and aims at achieving the training goal of precise and appropriate oral/written Chinese. By improving their capability of oral expression in the context of discourses, the course can lay a solid foundation for taking other specialized courses.

    2) Advanced Oral Chinese

    This course centers on discourse-based drills that assists the students to constantly upgrade their capability of higher-level oral communication in oral Chinese. Therefore, the students can express their viewpoints and opinions in various social activities in a correct, fluent, natural and apt manner, depending on the topics, talkers and occasions.

    3) News Listening

    This course is designed for Chinese learners with a higher lingual capability. News broadcast in Chinese is used as a material and emphasis is laid on background information, lingual knowledge and instructions on news listening skills. A variety of fields and topics, including society, economy, education, health, technology, internet and culture, are involved so as to improve the students’ proficiency in news listening and their knowledge about all the aspects of social life in China.

    4) Writing in Chinese

    At this stage, the focus of writing is shifted primarily to the composition of expository and argumentative articles and academic papers. With the help of this course, the students can learn how to transfer common topics onto paper and master elementary knowledge about writing in Chinese. Also, they can apply the relevant writing skills and master the features & basic types of academic papers and the processes & methods required for data collection & creation.

    5) Reading of Chinese Publications

    This course is intended primarily to cultivate and hone the students’ capability of reading written Chinese. All the texts are selected from representative domestic newspapers and magazines ranging from politics, economy, culture to many other fields. There are such types of articles as news report, exclusive interviews of personages, comments on current events, feature stories and newsletters. While helping the students to obtain a panoramic view of the features of Chinese publications, this course also provides an all-sided insight into the current Chinese society and helps the students know about the world in the eyes of the Chinese people.

    6) Chinese Culture

    This course, primarily intended to introduce the basics and features of the Chinese culture, also helps the learners learn more about the current profile of contemporary China. Specifically, the emphasis is laid on the features of the Chinese culture, human geography, abridged history (significant events and figures in the Chinese history) and the culture & current profile of contemporary China.

    7) Computer Processing of Chinese

    The emphasis of this course is laid primarily on the basics of word processing (for Chinese characters) and courseware-created multimedia files. The contents of this course include basic skills of word processing (for Chinese characters), basic knowledge about multimedia courseware and basic skills of PPT file creation with courseware.

    8) Chinese Phonetics Teaching

    This course dwells primarily on the basics of phonetics, IPA and key & difficult points in the Chinese phonetic system. Also, the course expounds Chinese Pinyin Writing Rules, tone sandhi and phonetic practices for Chinese. Basic principles of phonetics teaching for Chinese as a second language and classroom teaching methods & skills are also introduced. Meanwhile, the students must take pronunciation correction exercises as appropriate.

    9) Chinese Characters Teaching

    This course dwells primarily on the basic knowledge, teaching methods and exercises of Chinese characters. Specifically expounded are the evolution of Chinese characters, the Six Categories of Characters, the nature of characters, the strokes/order of strokes/structure of characters, the traditional/simplified characters, the quantity of characters used in Chinese teaching, the order of characters in indexing, component teaching, the teaching of the shape/pronunciation/meaning of characters, multimedia demonstration in Chinese character teaching, and exercises and wordplays relevant to Chinese characters.

    10) Chinese Grammar Teaching

    This course is intended primarily to expound grammatical features & grammatical units of Chinese, common grammatical errors and grammar teaching. Specifically expounded are the features of the Chinese grammar, grammatical units of Chinese, classification of Chinese phases, syntactic structures of Chinese and sentence structures. Also included are common grammatical error analysis methods and the rationale and grammar teaching methods & skills relevant to teaching Chinese as a second language in the classroom.

    11) Chinese Vocabulary Teaching

    This course is intended primarily to introduce the basics of the Chinese vocabulary and the skills of teaching Chinese as a second language in the classroom. Specifically expounded are the rationale of vocabulary teaching for Chinese as a second language and the methods and skills relevant to vocabulary teaching in the classroom. Also included are the methods and skills of vocabulary demonstration, explanation and usage in classroom teaching at different syllabus stages, as well as phrase differentiation and error prediction.
