The Confucius Institute at University of Lagos has produced two secondary schools – Ikeja Junior Grammar School and Immaculate Junior School – as the candidates to represent Nigeria at the international edition of the Chinese Bridge competition in China later this year.

Both schools emerged first and second respectively at the 10th Chinese Bridge Proficiency Competition for Foreign Secondary School Students held recently at the University of Lagos, Akoka.

The competition was split into two – primary and secondary parts – as the students were quizzed on their proficiency in Manjurin speaking while the Chinese culture was also put on display by the children from both levels.

The winners were awarded a certificate of participation, medals and travelling tickets to China, beating 13 other schools across the state with their eye-catching performances and knowledge in the language.

The “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition is a large-scale international contest sponsored by Hanban, and is well-known in the cultural and educational exchanges worldwide. It consists of three events.

Speaking to our correspondent on the relevance of the competition, Director of the Confucius Institute, Unilag, Prof. Chimdi Maduagwu, said the event was designed to test the abilities of those who had studied Chinese within the year especially in speaking and identification of the culture.

Expressing satisfaction at the performance of the students, he said, “The performance was marvellous, the pupils could speak Chinese, tell stories in the language and converse in the language, which indicates that they are doing well. At the end of the competition, two schools emerged as overall winners to represent us in China amidst other schools from various parts of the globe.”

Maduagwu also advised the pupils who took part in the competition to keep working hard so that they could do better in future.
