On March 24th, 2018,Testing Center for Chinese Proficiency Tests at Confucius Institute at San Francisco State University (SF State) hosted the internet-based HSK/HSKK/YCT tests in 2018. 51 students from Northern California took part in the tests.

HSK levels 2, 4, 6 and YCT levels 1-4 were conducted in the morning. The youngest YCT test takers this time were brother and sister with their mother from Granite Bay, three hours’ drive to San Francisco. The brother is 9 years old, participating in the YCT level 4. The sister is only 5 years old, participating in YCT level 1. The examiners specially arranged them in the first row and instructed them to log on to the website, providing help at any time. The siblings, though young, were very confident and finished the tests smoothly. It’s obvious that the family enjoy learning Chinese and put much time and efforts in their Chinese education.

HSK levels 1, 3, 5 and HSKK (primary, intermediate and advanced levels) were carried out in the afternoon. Two of students participated in both the HSK and the HSKK. They are both Chinese Americans who have not receive formal Chinese education when they were young, and they rarely speak Chinese at home. After work, it was found that with the increasingly frequent exchanges between China and the United States, Chinese was very helpful in their career development. So they began to learn Chinese in their spare time. By taking HSK test, some of the participants would like to apply for a scholarship from Confucius Institute to go to China to learn Chinese and understand Chinese culture.
