Feel the art of traditional Chinese painting
—— “Discover China” successfully held in Napier

On the morning of September 2, “Discover China” traditional Chinese painting workshop, which was held by the Confucius Institute at Victoria University of Wellington, successfully opened in a classroom of Taradale Intermediate School (TIS) in Napier, New Zealand.

Chen Kangwei, an artist and teacher of traditional Chinese painting, was invited to lecture the workshop as the guest teacher. At first, under Mr Chen’ guidance, the TIS students who were present took a shot at traditional Chinese ink-making , which is done by grinding an inkstone aginst an inkslab. After some ink was made, they started to follow Mr Chan’s directions for painting some cute animals such as pandas and kiwi birds.

Besides, that day was also TIS’ opening day, and many visiting parents and students were attracted to the room by what was going on there. During the period, Mr Chan painted more animals like lifelike flying birds and dragons, which aroused more interest in the parents and students who were eager to pick up a Chinese writing brush to have a try and feel the charm of the Chinese painting art.

"Discovery China" series are a brand cultural project of the Confucius Institute at Victoria University. Choosing the opening day to hold the traditional Chinese painting workshop at TIS was aimed at providing more opportunities for students and parents to learn about Chinese classes and experience Chinese culture.
