Deputy Director Guo Weimin Visits Confucius Institute at Ateneo de Manila University

On August 19th, a 15-member delegation headed by Guo Weimin, Deputy Director of the State Council Information Office, paid a visit to the Confucius Institute at the Ateneo de Manila University. Angel Alella, Novie Lozada and Patrick Tela, officials of the Philippine Presidential Communication Office, Wang Wenjun, Deputy Director of China Radio International and Liu Yiqun, Second Secretary of the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines and others accompanied Guo Weimin and his delegation.

Accompanied by these honored guests from home and abroad, Guo Weimin and his delegation visited the Confucius Institute, where Cynthia Liang introduced and showcased its accomplishments, such as its history, faculty, enrollment scale, curriculum settings, students, projects as well as teaching materials and teaching aids.

Guo claimed that Confucius Institutes are important platforms to popularize Chinese culture overseas and that the Confucius Institute at the Ateneo de Manila University has scored high in promoting Chinese culture and building the bridge of friendship between China and the Philippines.

On the spot, two Chinese teachers of the institute performed Guzheng (a traditional Chinese musical instrument) and Bajiquan (a Chinese martial art) respectively. The melodious music and vigorous martial art show won the acclamation from the delegation.

After the visit, Guo and his delegation held talks with Cynthia Liang about the status quo and prospects of the institute, hoping that it will develop new ideas and innovative projects on the basis of these achievements and contribute more to the friendship between the two countries.

Before the delegation departed, Cynthia Liang, on behalf of the Confucius Institute at the Ateneo de Manila University, presented Guo Weimin two books published by the institute: Chinese Painting in the Philippines, a picture album by the students in Chinese painting class and The Chinese Language and Culture Education in Southeast Asia, a collection of research findings of the institute.
