On October 14th, President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina jointly attending the inauguration ceremony for China-Bangladesh key cooperative projects in Dhaka

At the inauguration ceremony, Arefin Siddique, Vice-Chancellor of University of Dhaka, noted that people of China and Bangladesh enjoy a long history in cultural exchanges and, thanks to the close cooperation and increasingly frequent cultural and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries, there is a growing demand in learning Chinese in Bangladesh. The establishment of the Confucius Institute at University of Dhaka will facilitate Bangladeshi people to learn the Chinese language and know more about China and the Chinese culture, which will further boost cooperation in various fields between the two countries.

Long before President Xi’s visit to Bangladesh, students of the Confucius Institute at University of Dhaka had asked their Chinese language teachers to teach them to write the Chinese characters “Xi Zhu Xi, Wo Men Huan Ying Nin!” (President Xi, we welcome you!), so as to show their excitement and expectations in President Xi’s visit. A student with the Chinese name Gao Li said with great excitement, “Mastering Chinese is my dream, and I want to study in China. Seeing leaders of our two countries jointly inaugurate this Confucius Institute, I am fully confident in pursuing my dream. I must learn Chinese well in the future.”

The Confucius Institute at University of Dhaka is jointly established by Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and University of Dhaka in Bangladesh, with Yunnan University as its Chinese partner institution. As the second one in Bangladesh, it will give full play to the advantages of the two partner universities in language teaching and research and South Asian studies so as to become a Confucius Institute which carries forward China-Bangladesh friendship and provides a wide array of services in Chinese language teaching, cultural promotion, country-specific studies and academic exchanges.
