Brochure of Professional Development Program for Chinese Language Teachers in South Asian Countries
For the purpose of deepening cultural exchanges between China and South Asian countries and promoting the localization of Chinese language teaching, Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban (hereinafter referred to as “Hanban”) launches the “Confucius Institute Scholarship: Professional Development for Chinese Language Teachers in South Asian Countries” to sponsor students from South Asia to study Chinese in dozens of universities (hereinafter referred to as “host universities” ), who shall return to their home countries to teach Chinese language with the sponsorship of Hanban.
I. Eligibility
Applicants shall be non-Chinese citizens from South Asia and be in good health, aged below 35 , among which in-service Chinese language teachers shall be aged below 45 and applicants for Bachelor’s degree shall be aged below 20. Preference will be given to South Asian students studying in China or winners of the "Chinese Bridge” Proficiency Competitions for Foreign College Students and High School Students.
Applicants shall apply at their own choice and sign agreement with Hanban, committing to teach Chinese language when they return to their home countries for at least 5 years.
II. Category of Scholarship
Scholarship for One-Academic-Year of Chinese language learning + Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages(BTCSOL)
Scholarship recipients will be sponsored for five academic years from autumn semester of 2015. The applicant should have a high school certificate or above. Only those who pass the first-academic-year assessment with the score of at least 180 on HSK (level 5) and 50 on HSKK (intermediate level) can proceed with their study in China for BTCSOL with the scholarship.
Scholarship of BTCSOL
Scholarship recipients will be sponsored for four academic years from autumn semester of 2015. The Applicant should have a high school certificate or above, and score no less than 180 in HSK (level 3) and 40 scores in HSKK (intermediate level). Only those who pass the first-academic-year assessment with the score of at least 180 on the HSK (level 5) and 50 on the HSKK (intermediate level) are entitled to next year’s scholarships.
Scholarship for Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages(MTCSOL)
Scholarship recipients will be sponsored for two academic years from autumn semester of 2015. The applicant should have a bachelor degree or its equivalent, score at least 180 on the HSK (level 5) and 50 on the HSKK (intermediate level). Preference will be given to applicant with a specific teaching post (certification by the institution he/she will teach for is required). Only those who pass the annual assessment with the score of at least 180 on the HSK (level 6) and 70 on the HSKK (intermediate level) by the end of the first-academic-year are qualified to next year’s scholarship.
III. Scholarship Coverage and Criteria
(I) A roundtrip flight of economic class shall be provided every academic year for foreign students studying in China, covering the shortest distance between the residing place of the scholarship recipient’s home country and the Chinese host university where he/she is studying.
(II) Scholarship recipients are exempt from tuition, accommodation fees on campus, and are provided with monthly living allowance, and comprehensive insurance for foreign students studying in China. Monthly living allowance is provided at the following rates (CNY per month): a. 2,500 yuan for Bachelor’s Degree Students and One-Academic-Year Students; b. 3,000 yuan for MTCSOL Students.
(III) Hanban will support the graduates to teach Chinese in their home countries for five years, during which their salary shall be paid by Hanban.
IV. Recruitment Procedures
(I) Since the issue date of this brochure, applicants may log on to the Confucius Institute Scholarship website at http://cis.chinese.cn, set up an individual account, read information on host universities and majors, complete and submit the Confucius Institute Scholarship Application Form and the Agreement with their signature (in PDF format) online by June 10, 2015.
(II) Hanban entrusts Confucius Institutes or independent Confucius Classrooms, overseas Chinese test centers, education and culture offices (sections) of Chinese Embassies (Consulates), host universities and higher education institutes in those countries with no Confucius Institutes in place as the recommending institutions. The recommending institutions shall examine the qualification and application materials of applicants, and submit a complete list of recommended applicants to Hanban by June 20, 2015.
(III) Host universities are responsible for reviewing the qualification materials of applicants and submitting the proposed name list of qualified candidates to Hanban by June 30, 2015.
(IV) Hanban will organize an expert panel for final selection, and publish the name list of successful applicants on the Scholarship website (http://cis.chinese.cn) after July 15, 2015. Hanban will also inform the host universities and the recommending institutions. The applicants shall be notified by the recommending institutions accordingly.
(V) The host universities shall mail the Admission Letter, Enrollment Instructions, Visa Application Form for Foreigners to Study in China (JW202 Form) and the electronic file of Confucius Institute Scholarship Certificate to successful applicants and notify the recommending institutions before August 1,2015.
V. Application Documents
Applicants are advised to log onto the Scholarship website, fill out the Confucius Institute Scholarship Application Form, and attach the electronic files of the following materials:
1. Photocopy of passport photo page.
2. Photocopies of HSK and HSKK score reports.
3. Highest education diploma attained(scheduled graduation proof or official proof of student status. Non-Chinese or non-English documents should be notarized).
4. Reference letter and letter of commitment. The MTCSOL Scholarship applicant is required to submit two reference letters from professors or associate professors (in Chinese or English) and a written commitment stating that the applicant will be engaged in Chinese language teaching for at least 5 years upon graduation. College students majored in Chinese in countries with no Confucius Institutes shall submit a reference letter signed and issued by the President of the college.
5. Applicants under the age of 18 shall submit relevant legal documents of entrusted legal guardians in China.
6. Winners of preliminary rounds of the “Chinese Bridge” Proficiency Competitions in their respective countries shall submit award proof and a reference letter from the Chinese Embassy (or Consulate) in the competition area.
7. Those applying for scholarship of MTCSOL are required to provide the agreements signed with the Confucius Institutes or the institutions which they will work for.
8. Other materials required by host universities.
VI. Points for Attention
(I) If the name on the application form is inconsistent with the name on the scanned passport file, or relevant certification material is incomplete, the application will be invalid.
(II) If the scholarship recipient cannot register at the host university in time for certain reasons, he/she shall inform the host university 15 days prior to the registration day with a written explanation. For those who cannot complete registration without any reason, the scholarship will be cancelled. He/she shall not apply for the scholarship again.
(III) Scholarships will be canceled for those who cannot pass the health examination.
